![]() Let’s talk about mattress cleaning, and why you really need to know about the uninvited guests that live on your mattresses.
First off though, if after reading this, you have troubles sleeping, or feel the need to only sleep in hazmat pyjamas, I’m sorry. But we have a solution, so please bear with us. The uninvited guests in question are called dust mites. They are incredibly small, approximately ¼ of a millimetre long, and look like an alien nightmare. They eat off your dead skin cells, live for a hundred days, and can produce 60 to 100 eggs. They excrete twice their bodyweight every day and there’s millions of them, living on your mattress. These little creatures andthe excrement they produce are so tiny, they can be easily inhaled into your lungs, and this can be a major problem for those who suffer from breathing issues like asthma, or have allergies. Vacuuming does have its uses. It’s a good thing to have a regularly scheduled vacuum clean. But it’s not enough. As with carpets, rugs, or your upholstery and furniture fibres, vacuuming doesn’t get deep enough into the mattress fibres where the dust mites and their excrement are located. A good, proper professional clean, however, does get deep into the fibres. You could try to clean it yourself, but the most likely result is that you’ll end up with a wet mattress for a few days (which brings in the real problem of mildew into the equation), and it will still be crawling with dust mites. |
